From Pennsylvania Farmland to a Carolina Gathering Place
A family legacy of nourishment, community, and care continues at The Barn.

The Legacy of Maywood Farms
In the rolling fields of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, during the Great Depression, Carter Alexander Bache built something extraordinary. Known throughout the Wyoming Valley for his integrity and generosity, he owned and operated Maywood Farms — a network of fourteen working farms that provided milk and fresh food for the families of upstate Pennsylvania when times were toughest.
From his modest dairy barns and a handful of devoted farmhands, Carter Bache supplied his community through both his farms and the Carter Bache Stores in nearby Nanticoke, PA. Each bottle of milk, each loaf of bread, carried a spirit of care and craftsmanship that helped his neighbors endure.
A Family of Farmers
The Bache family story is one of perseverance and purpose. Generations worked the land, milking pure-bred cattle, harvesting feed, and delivering goods door-to-door with the words “Maywood Farms – Nanticoke, PA” painted proudly on every truck.
Those values—hard work, honesty, and feeding people well—were passed down to Carter’s daughter, Lynn Rolle, who carries that same spirit of hospitality and stewardship into everything she touches.

From Farm to Community Table

Lynn, now co-owner of The Barn, grew up surrounded by stories of the farm—the smell of hay, the rhythm of milking, and the satisfaction of serving neighbors. Together with her family, she has carried forward her father’s philosophy: food is love made visible.
What began as Carter Bache’s barns in Pennsylvania has found new life in The Barn in Southern Pines, NC—a place that still honors its agricultural roots while nourishing a modern community through good food, shared tables, and music.
Then and Now
The Heart of Our Work
From one family’s farm to another family’s dream, The Barn exists to feed, connect, and celebrate our community—just as Carter Bache did nearly a century ago.
